Sohar lies on the Al Batinah coast, roughly 200 to 230km north-west of Muscat and about two hours away on the fast dual-carriageway that runs from the capital via Barka all the way to the UAE border. It is a working port city with a long history, and a convenient base for the fertile coastal plain of date plantations between the sea and the mountains.

Around Sohar
The whitewashed Sohar Fort, with its small museum, sits near the seafront, and the town's fish market, built in the shape of a traditional dhow, is worth a look. Inland and north, the Batinah rolls on through plantations and quiet villages toward the mountains. Most of it is easy tarmac; the rougher wadi tracks are where a 4x4 earns its keep.
