Where a 4x4 is worth it
Much of Oman is comfortable in a normal car: the cities, the coast roads and the main highways are wide and well paved. A 4x4 earns its place off the tarmac. The Wahiba Sands are the clearest case, where reaching the desert camps means crossing soft sand that a saloon cannot manage. The high viewpoints of Jebel Shams and the steep village roads nearby mix tarmac with graded gravel and loose rock, and are far easier, and safer, in a proper four-wheel drive.
Some places sit in between. The final stretch into Wadi Bani Khalid crosses shallow water channels that a standard SUV handles in normal conditions, but which deepen after rain. If in doubt, size up: the difference between a good day and a stuck one is usually the vehicle.

Drive it right
Sand driving has its own rules: lower the tyre pressure before you enter the dunes, and reinflate once you are back on tarmac. If you are new to it, stay near the sealed access road and consider a local guide for the deep interior. Just as important, check the paperwork: many standard rental agreements exclude damage that happens off paved roads, so make sure your booking specifically allows off-road use before you head into the Wahiba or up a wadi.
