Arriving at MCT

Land, collect the car, and drive

Muscat International Airport (MCT) is Oman's main gateway, on the west side of the capital at Al-Seeb. It is the simplest place to begin a self-drive trip: pick-up sits in the arrivals hall, and the highway toward central Muscat and out to the interior is a short, well-signed drive away.

Book the car before you fly, land, and go. Roads across Oman are wide and modern, with clear signage in Arabic and English, so finding your way out of the airport and onto Sultan Qaboos Street takes minutes.

What comes with the car

Where the road goes from the airport

From MCT, Sultan Qaboos Street (Route 1) runs east into Muscat, Mutrah and the corniche in around half an hour. Turn inland and Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and the Wahiba Sands open up within a couple of hours. For the far south and the Salalah khareef, most visitors fly on and pick up a second car at Salalah.

A car worth the drive

Muscat and the coast road take an easy automatic. The wadis, the dune tracks and the mountain switchbacks want a high-clearance 4x4, the difference between a good day and a stuck one. New to driving here? The driving in Oman guide covers the essentials. If you are heading down from the UAE, the Dubai to Oman crossing needs a car cleared for the border in advance.
