Getting around the capital

Why Muscat rewards a car

Muscat has no single city centre. The capital runs as a long ribbon along the Gulf of Oman, and its landmarks sit far apart: the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the west, the Royal Opera House at Shati Al-Qurum, and Old Muscat and the Mutrah Corniche away to the north-east. Walking between them is not realistic, least of all in the heat, so a rental car is the natural way to see the city on your own time.

Three main roads run east to west through the city: Sultan Qaboos Street, 18th November Street and the Muscat Expressway. They flow well outside the busy stretches, roughly 6.30 to 9 in the morning and again from mid-afternoon into the evening. Signage is clear in Arabic and English, and parking is free at the malls, at most tourist sites and along the Mutrah Corniche at weekends.

What comes with the car

A day across Muscat

Start early at the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, open to visitors from 8.30 to 11 most mornings, with free entry and free parking. From there it is a short drive along Sultan Qaboos Street to the Royal Opera House, then on to Old Muscat for the Al-Alam Palace and the sixteenth-century forts above the harbour. Finish on the Mutrah Corniche, park up, and walk the souq as the light drops.

Where the road goes next

Most trips begin the moment you land, with a car collected at Muscat Airport. From the capital, Nizwa, Jebel Akhdar and the Wahiba Sands are all within a couple of hours, and the Batinah highway runs north to Sohar; the wadis and dune tracks want a high-clearance 4x4. First time behind the wheel here? The driving in Oman guide covers the essentials, and anyone arriving overland should read the Dubai to Oman crossing before setting off.
